Awkward Moments Only Pakistanis Living in Malaysia Understand

1. When you realize that the word ‘susu’ means milk in Malay and urine in your own language, Urdu.
It comes as a shock when your friend says: “Let’s go and drink susu from the canteen”.

2. When Malaysians automatically assume that you are either from Karachi or Lahore. Seriously, dude, there are other cities in Pakistan.

3. The so-called ‘Pakistani biryani’ annoys you.
When instead of getting the royal dish biryani, you are served white rice with disastrous chicken sauce plopped on top.

4. When the Malaysians automatically assume that you are rich because you have at least one maid at your home in Pakistan.

5. When you are really excited about the ‘kurma’ you are about to be served at a restaurant and realize that kurma means dates.

Despite the weird assumptions and misunderstandings, you enjoy your time in the beautiful country. (And continue to miss the edibles of your home country).

How a Pakistani Celebrates Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is tomorrow. If you are looking for a recipe that will make you popular among your relatives, but you are too lazy to invest several number of hours into making a perfect dessert, let me introduce you to my quick recipe of Chinese Almond Cookies. They are mouthwatering. They are crispy. They are simple. They are beautiful. They are treats for your eyes, mouth and your tummy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 and 1/4 cup of flour.
  • 1/2 cup of caster sugar (You can add less if you want. Add 1/2 cup if you are a sweet tooth).
  • 3/4 teaspoon of baking powder.
  • 3/4 teaspoon of baking soda.
  • 100 g of ground almonds (You can vary the amount according to your taste).
  • 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt.
  • 1/3 cup of oil. (You can add more if the dough appears to be dry).
  • 1 egg yolk.
Β Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  • Mix together the dry ingredients in a large bowl (The first 6 ingredients).
  • Slowly add 30 ml of oil into the bowl of dry ingredients and mix. Now add some more oil and mix. Continue doing so until the dough becomes cohesive. (We don’t need a dough that flows).
  • Grease and flour the baking pan.
  • Roll small balls of the dough and line them on your pan.
  • Glaze your cookies dough with egg yolk using a pastry brush. (This gives the cookies that appetizing brown colour on the top).
  • Leave the cookies in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes. The cookies would have turned slightly brown by then.
  • Wait for the cookies to cool down. And then store them into an airtight box.

“If you won’t store them after they cool down, you will end up eating the whole batch, just like me.” Hahaha

Have fun surprising your family with the heavenly cookies on this Chinese New Year. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Eating with the Poor=Dining with the Rich

A few months ago was 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, according to the Islamic calendar, and it marked the birth of Muslim’s Prophet Muhammad (May peace be upon him), and the day was celebrated with great zeal and zest in Karachi, Pakistan.

Muslims searched about the life of the Prophet and learned about peace, harmony, and discipline. The other activity that was done by the citizens was the distribution of food. Scrumptious snacks were distributed among individuals, especially the poor people.

As I looked at the way poor people craved for food, I realized #WhatFoodMeans to them is very different to #WhatFoodMeans to us. While scrumptious food is a luxury for us, it is a necessity for them. While it is a means to enjoy life for us, it is a fine line between life and death for them.

With my sister, cousins, and Chachas (uncles), I, went in a van to distribute chips to the kids living in different areas. It melted my heart to see thousands of other people doing the same, and tears almost flowed out of my eyes when I saw young children jumping with joy.

I loved the experience for two reasons:

1) It allowed me to witness the beautiful smiles on the faces of people.

Their eyes twinkled with delight as they accumulated the delectable snacks. We spoke with a few kids and we couldn’t contain our laughter at their joy. Although they had scarce food, they shared with each other. As I ate with the generous kids, my whole body filled with energy and I realized that eating with the poor was tantamount to dining with the rich.

2) I got free snacks too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ˜€

We got 32 boxes of juices, 7 ice lollies, packets of Biryani (Pakistan’s most royal food πŸ˜› ), zinger burgers, chocolates, biscuits, chips etc!!! πŸ˜€

We received such a great amount of stuff that consequently, keeping it in the van became a conundrumΒ and we had to give away some of it. Β ^_^ And this is where I realized: “It literally costs zero dollars to bring make others happy”.

The main objective of the event was to spread happiness among the people and that was beautifully achieved by the citizens. Presently, countries such as Ethiopia are facing severe drought, and it is our duty to heal each other through tough time. I just hope that the people would continue to help each other throughout the year so that the gap between rich and poor can be bridged.

-Peace Out
